The 245 includes 76 independent creators (tracked here), 29 Tier 1 legacy and nonprofit anchors, 33 ethnic and community outlets, and 107 additional local outlets ranging from the Tribune to neighborhood newsletters — all mapped in the 2026 Medill Local News Initiative study.

How this worksThis page maps three distinct layers of Chicago’s media ecosystem. The journalism layer tracks creator-journalists covering beats — politics, criminal justice, education, health, immigration, labor, housing, and more — where independent voices are building audiences outside legacy newsrooms. The lifestyle layer tracks creators covering food, neighborhoods, things to do, and local culture — an overlapping ecosystem that also documents city life through a different lens. The institutions layer tracks anchor newsrooms and nonprofit journalism organizations that make up Chicago’s existing media infrastructure — not creator-journalists, but essential ecosystem context.

Anchor Institutions & Infrastructure

Outlets, nonprofits, and institutions that anchor the Chicago independent media landscape. These are not individual creators — they’re the infrastructure around them.

Institutional Collapse Context

The Chicago Tribune was decimated under Alden Global Capital. The Chicago Sun-Times merged with WBEZ. The Chicago Reader moved to a monthly print schedule. Of the 245 outlets tracked by Medill’s Local News Initiative, the majority of total audience reach is concentrated in a handful of legacy broadcast and digital outlets. The independent creator layer has not filled the accountability void.

The Anchor Institutions

Block Club Chicago (480K social following) and City Bureau (27K) are the backbone of independent Chicago journalism. South Side Weekly (45K) and Injustice Watch (25K) fill adjacent gaps.

Methodology & Sourcing

The 245-outlet count is sourced from Northwestern Medill’s Local News Initiative 2026 ecosystem study. Atlas creator and lifestyle layers are independently mapped through desk research and spidering sessions. Data current as of June 2026. Contact us with updates or additions.

Each dot is one creator. Position shows their primary beat and platform type. Size is uniform — this is a presence map, not a reach map.

Beat Coverage Map — Independent Creator Journalists Only

This map reflects creator-journalists tracked by the Atlas. It does not include institutional newsrooms — Block Club Chicago, Chalkbeat, ProPublica Illinois, and others are in the Institutions layer.

Labor & Workers Emerging

Chicago is one of the most union-dense cities in America. One creator now covers this beat.

Now tracked: Jerry Mead-Lucero / Labor Express Radio — Chicago’s only English-language labor news program, WLPN 105.5 FM since 2004.

LGBTQ+ Community Emerging

One creator now covers this beat. Ecosystem remains thin at the individual creator level.

Now tracked: Anna DeShawn / Queer News (Ambie Award 2023, E3 Radio founder). Windy City Times covers institutionally but has limited digital reach and no creator presence.

Immigration Emerging

Two creators now cover immigration and Latino community issues.

Now tracked: Francia García Hernández / ¡Presente! (CAN TV) and Unraveled Press (TikTok documentary, 9.8K followers).

Housing & Neighborhood Emerging

One creator covers the Northwest Side. South and West Side housing coverage remains entirely absent.

Now tracked: Ariel Parrella-Aureli / LoganSquarist.

Investigative Gap

No independent creator-journalist does original investigative work in Chicago. Injustice Watch, Better Government Association, and ProPublica Illinois fill this role as institutions — but no individual solopreneur operates on the investigative beat.

CTA / Transit Critical Gap

No independent creator tracks CTA accountability. Streetsblog Chicago is the only transit-adjacent outlet across all 245 tracked — a national franchise, not a Chicago-first outlet. One outlet serving 2.7 million people on a system used by 1.6 million daily riders.

Education / CPS Gap

Board Rule and Daniel B. Rodriguez cover CPS policy. No creator covers the financial accountability and governance beat of the third-largest U.S. school district.

Health & Science Gap

One creator covers health — Johnny Cole Dickson via video. The two independent public health podcasters who previously anchored this beat were national in scope, not Chicago-specific. No creator covers Chicago-specific health policy, hospital closures, environmental health, or CPS health programs.

Environment & Great Lakes Partial

350 Chicago covers climate advocacy. No creator covers the Chicago River, lakefront policy, or industrial pollution as a reporting beat. No dedicated environmental outlet across all 245 tracked outlets.
